[trans] 101219 “SungKyunKwan Scandal” Fans “Cannot Forget Scholar Seon Joon!”

Posted Image

The KBS drama “SungKyunKwan Scandal” has received over 290,000 episode reviews.

For typical dramas which receive passionate responses among the viewers, the maximum number of reviews they will get in forums will be around 20,000 to 30,000 posts. The KBS drama with ratings of over 50% “Baker King Kim Tak Goo” has received 26,128 reviews to date. (19 Dec, 6pm) “SungKyunKwan Scandal” (with 300,056 replies) has over 11 times more reviews than “Baker King Kim Tak Goo.”

For this year’s KBS dramas, the total number of viewer reviews on the station's website stand at a total of 550,5808 posts, and among those, “SungKyunKwan Scandal” occupies 52% of them, which is more than the reviews of all the other dramas shown combined. (260,5119 posts). Regardless of viewership ratings, but just based on the number of reviews, “SungKyunKwan Scandal” is still the most popular among all KBS dramas.

KBS Drama Production Department’s Gwak Ki Won expressed “I had already anticipated Micky Yoochun‘s (Park Yoochun’s) marketability (value). But I didn’t think that the viewer response would be this great. The “SungKyunKwan Scandal” viewer forums have also put up various news about Lee Seon Joon (Park Yoochun). Among the viewers, there have also been some that claim to be scholars and engaging in intellectual debates.

[trans] 101216 Vietnamese Man : “In which way am I worse than Micky Yoochun?”

T/N:  Please be warned that this isn't really news, just something entertaining that we thought we would share - It was taken off a Vietnamese Radio Show – it’s written by an upset boyfriend so please understand!

Dear QnSs, does love equal to jealousy? When it comes to love, everyone feels jealous sometimes!

I love my girlfriend, so I am jealous, but I cannot do anything about it. Is there someone else like me too?

I am jealous because of her idol, and I am very angry. It looks like I’m being selfish, but I don’t like it when she talks about Micky Yoochun all the time. We’ve been dating for three years, but to her, our love is not comparable to her love for Yoochun. She’s liked Yoochun, a Korean singer, for 6 years now.

Is Micky Yoochun better than me? I am older than him, he is born in 1986, but looks 30! I don't dare to say this in front of her, but "Is Micky Yoochun that good looking? I am too! Is he that famous? I'm not bad as well." But she keeps missing out on dates with me because she is always busy with Micky Yoochun's fan club.

Her room is full of Yoochun’s posters, her computer desktop as well! Even her facebook’s display picture is Yoochun! I have never seen her use my picture before.

I keep telling myself, “Don’t be bothered by him, he does not exist in her life, she likes him but she cannot do anything about it.” But I am still mad at her. Two weeks ago, we argued, and I insulted her idol in front of her. Until now, we have not made up. I finally know where Yoochun stands in her heart.

I want to dedicate this song, written by Micky Yoochun, Tohoshinki’s “Kiss The Baby Sky” to her, and tell her that “I know I’m wrong, I offended your idol, I won’t do it again. So please don’t be mad at me, I believe that my love for you is a thousand times stronger than your love for Yoochun.” Thank you!

[trans] 101216 Prain CEO Tweets About JYJ's Visit To Pure Arena

(Yeo Joon Yeong) Jaejoong, Yoochun, and Junsu came and had lunch at Pure Arena and stayed for five hours before leaving just now. Their menu consisted of steak, pasta and rice topped with sashimi. Just like what Junsu wrote on the cafe wall says, the three of them enjoyed the tofu-shake we gave them @mjjeje

(jejezeze) @yeojy Please tell us which member ate what food~^^
(Yeo Joon Yeong) @jejezeze We prepared steak, pasta and sashimi for them to share so they all ate all three dishes. But Jaejoong said he wanted to eat rice, so I made the rice topped with sashimi for him myself, and he emptied the bowl saying it was declicious.

(Yeo Joon Yeong) They're Johnny Walker Blues. They said they'd be back so I gifted them with the brand of alcohol they liked and we're keeping them for the two. Junsu said he doesn't drink so we gave him a free-tofu-shakes-for-eternity pass.

(Yeo Joon Yeong) @GYULANI "Wow it's amazing, the tofu tastes fruity." This is what Jaejoong said to the other members when he drank the shake.

[trans] 101217 Inkigayo's Homepage Is Flooded With Complaints "Why Isn't JYJ Performing?"

"We request that JYJ appear on Inkigayo"

Netizens' voices calling for JYJ's appearance on TV are growing in number and strength.

The Viewers' Opinion thread and the Appearance Request thread on the SBS' Inkigayo homepage are filled with fans' posts asking for JYJ's appearance on the show. These requests first began in October when JYJ released their first album 'The Beginning' and have been appearing every week since then.

When it became known that JYJ, who have been unable to appear on TV due to their legal dispute with SM Entertainment, will appear as invitational guests at the KBS Drama Acting Awards on the 31st, 230 requests for JYJ's appearance on Inkigayo flooded in, in one day on December 13th. Netizens were spotted stating things such as, "If JYJ are going to appear on stage at the KBS Drama Acting Awards, then isn't it time for SBS to open their doors too?"

There are no apparent reasons that broadcasting companies can give to deny JYJ appearances on music programs. Netizens stated, "Their songs are good and their album sales are too, so I don't see why we can't see them or hear their voices on TV," and "I hope they are able to appear. As many viewers wish for their appearance, I hope you listen to the voices of your viewers."

Fans' complaints increased rapidly on the 15th when JYJ's song 'Ayyy Girl' suddenly disappeared from Inkigayo's 'Take 7' Nominees list.

JYJ fans seemed to be taken aback as they were unable to understand why JYJ were suddenly excluded from the Take 7 Nominees list. It is being speculated that this occurred due to the Korean Federation of Pop Culture and Art Industry (KFPCAI)'s request in October to broadcasting companies, asking them to deny JYJ appearance on their shows. The KFPCAI stated that allowing JYJ to be active, even though they have not finished their legal dispute with SM Entertainment, would bring problems to the entertainment industry as it would disrupt order within the industry.

The voices requesting JYJ's appearance on music programs are continuing to rise, but Inkigayo's side is staying silent and adding to the frustration of the situation.

[trans] 101215 Junsu's Fans Donate To Help The Hearing-Impaired For The Third Consecutive Year

'Xiah Soul', a fan community dedicated to (Xiah) Junsu, who is currently working as a member of JYJ and a musical actor, has donated money to the 'Finding Sound for Hearing-Impaired Children' foundation for the third consecutive year.

As the fans wished to gift Junsu with a meaningful gift rather than a materialistic gift to celebrate his birthday, Xiah Soul made their first donation to the 'Finding Sound for Hearing-Impaired Children' foundation on Junsu's birthday, December 15th, 2008.

The first child to receive the donation was hearing-impaired Kim Dan Hee (Grade 6 at the time). Xiah Soul donated enough money to cover her artificial snail surgery and speech therapy fees and since the successful surgery, Dan Hee has been receiving continuous speech therapy. Currently, she has improved greatly and is able to engage in every-day conversations with short sentences.

Xiah Soul was in the spotlight last December for donating money to Dan Hee's sister Dan Ah, who was also hearing-impaired, and decided to make their third donation this year to Song Yoo Chan (3 year old boy) to celebrate Junsu's birthday.

Junsu and his fans impressed many with both singer and fanclub donating to a good cause as Junsu donated treasured belongings to the Snails of Love's 119 Event of Love Charity Bazaar in January for Xiah Soul, who had been doing charity work in his name, and for the rehabilitation of many more hearing-impaired persons.

The administrator of Xiah Soul stated, "We find it meaningful that our relationship with the 'Sound Finding Journey', which began with the hopes that those who couldn't hear could be given the chance to be moved by Xiah Junsu's music, has been going on for three years," and "As Xiah Junsu and Xiah Soul are both very interested in the culture of giving, we wish to keep donating to the worthy cause as long as Xiah Soul is around."

Xiah Soul's continuous support for the cause became the stepping stone in changing people's perspectives of pop culture and fan clubs. Xiah Soul is being used as a desirable example of a fanclub sending a positive message to the youth of Korea to be more active in society.

[info] 101214 Kim Junsu Stars In 2nd Musical "Tears Of Heaven" - Press Conference Q&A

Love that bloomed during the Vietnam War in 1967 in musical “Miss Saigon” has arrived in the upcoming “Tears of Heaven.” The new production derived from singer Jo Sung-mo’s music video for song “Do You Know” (2000), is about the love triangle between Korean soldier Jun (Kim Junsu, Jung Sang-yoon, Jeon Dong-seok) dispatched to Vietnam, female singer Lyn (Yoon Gong-joo, Lee Hye-i), and American Colonel Grayson (Brad Little).

In September of 2009, Seol & Company CEO Seol Do-yoon had declared the production “cannot be produced in Korea since our goal is to go to Broadway.” And a year later, “Tears of Heaven” really came to be produced by a creative team who “has worked on-Broadway before.” Frank Wildhorn of “Jekyll & Hyde” will compose the songs, Gabriel Barre of “Memphis” which swept four awards at this year’s 64th Tony Awards will direct and David Gallo will take charge of the stage’s design.

First and secondary readings for the script took place in New York a year ago and the English version of the soundtrack has been completed. And the idea for the musical may have come from Korea with its producer also being Korean, but the show, set to run at the Main Hall ‘Hae’ of The National Theater of Korea from February 1 to March 19 of next year, will show in the format of a licensed production with English lines and the lyrics for the songs translated. Judgement into whether the show is a success or a failure and how well it was produced will come when the show raises its curtains but until then, the interview below will quench your initial thirst regarding “Tears of Heaven.”

Q: It seems like it’ll be inevitable that “Tears of Heaven” will be compared to “Miss Saigon” because both are set during the Vietnam War and are about the love between a Vietnamese woman and a dispatched soldier.

Seol Do-yoon: If you think the two are similar because they’re set during the same time period, it would be the same for “Les Miserables” which is about the French Revolution or the “Phantom of the Opera” about the Opera House in Paris. That’s why I had asked our creative team from overseas, including Frank Wildhorn, about whether they had watched “Miss Saigon.” But the only similarity is that the setting is the Vietnam War. If you must compare the two, “Miss Saigon” told more about the Bui Doi or social phenomenon such as the ‘American Dream’ while “Tears of Heaven” is focused on love. And while “Miss Saigon” starts off with the actual photograph of the Vietnamese woman parting with her child at the airport, we start off with Jo Sung-mo’s music video for “Do You Know.” We held two workshops in New York with our producer there, officials related to the theater and several experts but not once did they say it’s similar to “Miss Saigon.”

Q: The fact that you cast Kim Junsu is definitely eye-catching. For what reason was this and what process did he go through to get the part?

Seol Do-yoon: Kim Junsu went through a private audition for his role, just like the rest of the cast. Of course we thought of how his casting would affect the production in terms of success but his capability as a musical actor had already been verified through “Mozart!” I felt that he was the right one for his role and the majority of creative teams overseas agreed to it as well.

Kim Junsu: I’m here today as a musical actor although I feel a bit ashamed to call myself one. This will be my second musical after “Mozart!” and unlike the previous production, “Tears of Heaven” will focus more and love along with elements of betrayal and conflict. And I personally think music is most important to a musical but Frank Wildhorn’s music was different from that of “Mozart!” --classical but containing a lot of pop music-like elements so I feel like that’s what I could do a good job of bringing out. It’s true that I’m very nervous as well but I’d like to enjoy the situation I’m in with the audience.

Q: You did “Mozart!” but you must feel a lot of pressure in terms of the acting since you’re originally a singer.

Kim Junsu: The pressure applies to singing as well. I went through a lot of trial and error while doing “Mozart!” because singing pop music is different from singing in a musical. There are differences in terms of vocalizing and how you weave in your emotions into your singing, although both are based on the same form of language that we call singing. And a lot of people are worried about my acting. All I can say for now is that I’ll work hard and improve on it so that I’ll become a better musical actor.

Q: There was controversy a few days ago over how much actor Cho Seung-woo receives for each show he stars in for musical “Jekyll & Hyde.” How much Kim Junsu made through “Mozart!” got revealed at the time as well. How much will he get for “Tears of Heaven”?

Seol: How much or how less one receives as a guarantee fee compared to someone else isn’t important because there isn’t a definite criteria -- it’ll depend on a variety of factors including the number of shows or the size of the theater. But if I may say so officially, Kim Junsu is taking part in “Tears of Heaven” with no guaranteed fee. The agency he is with invested in the production so he’ll be given a certain share of the production’s stake when it starts making profits.

Q: Jung Sang-yoon and Jeon Dong-seok, you’ll be switching off the role of Jun with Kim Junsu. Why did you choose to take on this role and could you give us a brief explanation of your character?

Jeon Dong-seok: I personally love Frank Wildhorn’s music so I’m happy to get to take part in another one of his productions after “The Count of Monte Cristo.” The songs are classical numbers and go well with me. Jun goes to Vietnam after giving up on his dream to become a writer. I see him as a character who is both sensitive and artistic.

Jung Sang-yoon: I played the role of Raoul for over a year in “Phantom of the Opera” so after being in one production for such a long time, I was full of the desire to take on a new musical and character and was lucky enough to get to choose a good musical. At first Jun is attracted to Lyn for her looks and voice but he’s someone that wants to cure her of the surprisingly dark and gloomy side to her.

Q: Brad Little, this will be your third time appearing in a musical in Korea after “Phantom of the Opera” and “Jekyll & Hyde.” What sort of character is Colonel Grayson?

Brad Little: I think I must be the first non-Korean actor who has been in Korean musicals. (laugh) Colonel Grayson is the staff officer of the ROK-U.S. Combined Forces Command. He falls in love with the beautiful Vietnamese singer Lyn and he wants her to love him back but it doesn’t happen so easily. It feels like he’s similar to the phantom from the “Phantom of the Opera” but he’s also completely different from phantom as well. There will also be a passionate and romantic theme to the article like in “Jekyll & Hyde” which female fans are bound to love so you can look forward to that as well. (laugh)

Q: In what language will the production be created? Colonel Grayson appears as a main character in the musical.

Seol: Grayson will say his lines in English and all the characters who speak with him will also speak in English. But conversations with Jun will be in Korean. This is a method that has almost never been attempted before and it may be difficult for the audience to immerse themselves into the story because there will be subtitles but we judged that it’s the right way to go about it. That’s also why the actors are pressured about the English but I told the producer yesterday that it may be better for the actors to have their characters use Korean-style English and Vietnamese-style English rather than speak the language perfectly.

Q: The participation by creative teams from overseas stands out.

Seol: The musical numbers by Frank Wildhorn are much more commercial and pop-like compared to his past work. They also have a degree of completion which is enough to appeal to fans in the United States. And David Gallo is a stage designer who has won the Tony Award in Broadway but he too will work in a different pattern than he has in the past including incorporating a lot of video. We have the perfect designs for each scene but they could change when we actually start making the musical. I am a bit worried that it may turn out too artistic.

Q: What’s the reason you insisted on working with a foreign crew when the production itself is Korean?

Seol: It would have been great to work with a Korean crew but there definitely needs to be improvement in certain areas. And a lot of people may be skilled but none of them have experience in Broadway and we need people from there to win.

Q: The show will premiere in Korea but is planning on touring to Asia and the rest of the world. In what way will the show run overseas?

Seol: The musical will still be in Korean when it goes on tour in Asia but when it goes to Europe and the U.S., we plan to pick an entirely new cast composed of actors from the countries the musical will show in.

Q: Has the schedule been set for the world tour?

Seol: Everything is in it’s planning stages right now. In the case of “Dream Girls” from 2009, it was easier to tour overseas since it was based on a production that’s already out but “Tears of Heaven” will run for the first time so I think we’ll start setting a schedule after producers from Japan and Europe come and watch our Korea show in February.
